Description

What Is Wegovy?

Wegovy contains semaglutide 2.4mg. It is a once-weekly prescription injection. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite control and blood sugar regulation.

By activating GLP-1 receptors, Wegovy reduces appetite, increases feelings of fullness, slows stomach emptying, and helps reduce overall calorie intake. Wegovy is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition. It must be used alongside dietary and lifestyle measures.

How Is Wegovy Taken?

Wegovy is supplied in a pre-filled pen.

  • Injected once weekly
  • On the same day each week
  • Into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm

Treatment starts at 0.25mg weekly and increases gradually over 16 weeks to 2.4mg. Gradual dose escalation helps manage side effects.

Who Is Wegovy Suitable For?

Wegovy may be suitable for adults who meet BMI criteria, have struggled with sustained weight loss, are willing to continue healthy lifestyle changes, and have no contraindications. It may not be appropriate for individuals with a history of medullary thyroid cancer, MEN2, pancreatitis, pregnancy/breastfeeding, or type 1 diabetes.

Wegovy vs Ozempic

Ozempic contains semaglutide but is licensed for type 2 diabetes at lower doses. Wegovy contains a higher maintenance dose (2.4mg) and is licensed specifically for weight management. They are not interchangeable without medical supervision.

What Happens If I Stop Wegovy?

Wegovy supports appetite control while in use. If treatment stops and lifestyle changes are not maintained, appetite may increase and weight regain may occur. Weight management is typically a long-term process.

FAQ

How effective is Wegovy?

In the STEP clinical trial, participants achieved average weight reductions of around 15% of starting body weight over approximately 68 weeks. These results were achieved in structured trial settings — individual results vary.

How is Wegovy different from Ozempic?

Ozempic contains semaglutide but is licensed for type 2 diabetes at lower doses. Wegovy is licensed specifically for weight management at a higher maintenance dose (2.4mg). They should not be used interchangeably without medical supervision.

How long will I need to take it?

Weight management treatment is often long term. Many patients remain on treatment to help maintain weight reduction, subject to regular clinical review. Stopping treatment without maintaining lifestyle changes may lead to weight regain.
