Description

What Is Spedra?

Spedra contains avanafil, a selective PDE5 inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction. In Europe, it is marketed by Menarini. Spedra is available in 50mg, 100mg and 200mg tablets. It is notable because some men may experience onset of action in as little as 15 minutes, although 30 minutes is more typical. Its effect lasts approximately 6 hours. As with all ED treatments, sexual stimulation is required.

How Does It Work?

Spedra enhances the nitric oxide–cyclic GMP pathway by selectively inhibiting PDE5. Avanafil is more selective for PDE5 compared with earlier agents. In theory, this may reduce some off-target effects, although real-world side effect profiles remain broadly similar to other PDE5 inhibitors. The mechanism remains the same: improved blood flow during sexual arousal.

How Quickly Does Spedra Work?

Spedra can begin working within 15 minutes in some men. However, allowing at least 30 minutes is sensible. Food, particularly high-fat meals, may delay absorption slightly. Its quicker onset may reduce the feeling of needing to plan well in advance.

Spedra vs Sildenafil and Tadalafil

All are PDE5 inhibitors. Spedra’s key difference is speed of onset. Tadalafil offers the longest duration. Sildenafil and Vardenafil have similar duration to Spedra but slightly slower onset on average. Effectiveness is broadly comparable across the class. Choice depends on individual preference and response.

Who Is Spedra Suitable For?

Spedra may be suitable for men who prefer faster onset, have not responded optimally to Sildenafil, or want moderate duration. It is not suitable for men taking nitrates or certain cardiovascular medicines. Suitability is assessed during consultation.

FAQ’s

Q: How quickly does Spedra work?

A: Spedra can begin working in as little as 15 minutes in some men, though 30 minutes is a more reliable estimate. It is one of the fastest-acting oral ED treatments available.

Q: How long does Spedra last?

A: Spedra generally remains effective for around 6 hours — longer than Sildenafil and Vardenafil for some men, but shorter than Tadalafil.

Q: What strengths is Spedra available in?

A: Spedra is available in 50mg, 100mg and 200mg tablets. Your pharmacist will recommend the most appropriate starting strength.

Q: Is Spedra better than Sildenafil?

A: Spedra’s main advantage is its faster onset of action. Effectiveness across the PDE5 inhibitor class is broadly comparable. If rapid onset is a priority and Sildenafil has not performed optimally, Spedra may be a suitable alternative.

Q: Can Spedra be taken with food?

A: Yes, though high-fat meals may delay absorption slightly. For fastest onset, taking it without a heavy meal is recommended.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These are usually mild and resolve as the medicine leaves the body:

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Nasal congestion

Rare but Serious Side Effects — Seek Urgent Medical Attention

  • Chest pain — seek urgent medical help
  • Sudden vision loss — seek urgent medical help
  • Prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism) — seek urgent medical help

Do Not Take If You:

  • Take nitrates (any form, recreational)
  • Have been advised to avoid sexual activity for cardiac reasons
  • Have certain cardiovascular conditions — suitability assessed during consultation

Cardiovascular Note: Sexual activity places moderate physical strain on the cardiovascular system. If you can climb two flights of stairs without chest pain or severe breathlessness, sexual activity is generally considered safe. Men with unstable heart disease should be assessed before treatment.
