Description

What is Avodart 0.5mg?

Avodart is the branded version of Dutasteride. Both contain the same active ingredient at the same dose and are clinically equivalent. Some patients prefer the branded product for personal reasons. It is licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but is widely used off-label by hair loss specialists for androgenic alopecia.

How does it work?

Avodart (Dutasteride) inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes, which convert testosterone into DHT. DHT causes hair follicles to weaken and shrink. By suppressing approximately 90% of DHT, Avodart more powerfully tackles the root cause of male pattern hair loss.

Avodart (Dutasteride) vs Finasteride

  • Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase; Finasteride inhibits type II only
  • Dutasteride achieves approximately 90% DHT suppression vs approximately 70% with Finasteride
  • May produce greater hair loss benefit, particularly for those who have not responded to Finasteride
  • Longer half-life — remains in the body longer after stopping treatment

Avodart vs Generic Dutasteride

Avodart and generic Dutasteride are clinically identical. The choice between branded and generic is a personal preference. Our pharmacist can advise on the most appropriate option for you.

How to take it

Take one capsule once daily, whole (do not crush or break), with or without food, at the same time each day.

Who should not take Avodart?

  • Women
  • Anyone under 18
  • People with liver problems or prostate issues
  • Anyone allergic to Dutasteride, soya, peanuts, or its components

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between Avodart and Dutasteride?

A: They are clinically identical — same active ingredient (Dutasteride 0.5mg), same dose. Avodart is the branded version and may be preferred by some patients for personal reasons.

Q: Is Avodart licensed for hair loss?

A: Avodart is licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia. For hair loss it is used off-label, which is legal, widely practised by hair loss specialists, and supported by clinical evidence.

Q: How long before I see results?

A: Stabilisation of hair loss is typically noticed within 3–6 months, with peak results usually at 2 years of continuous daily use.

Q: What if I stop taking Avodart?

A: DHT levels will rise again after stopping, and hair loss will typically resume. Benefits usually reverse within 9–12 months of stopping.

Q: Is Avodart better than Finasteride?

A: Dutasteride (Avodart) achieves greater DHT suppression (90% vs 70%) and studies suggest it can be more effective for some men, particularly those who have not responded to Finasteride.
