Hair Loss Treatment

Supporting you to be the you you want to be

Hair loss, known as alopecia, is a common condition that affects up to 50% of people in the UK. It usually develops gradually and can present as thinning at the crown, a reduced density of hair, or a receding hairline. While hair loss is not harmful to physical health, it is, understandably, a concern for many.

Understanding Hair Loss
What causes hair loss?

Genetic/Hormone causes

The main genetic cause of hair loss in men is androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. It can be inherited from either side of the family and is caused by an increase in the sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone-DHT. It is produced naturally as testosterone breaks down and causes a reduction in the absorption of vital nutrients required for healthy hair follicles, which causes them to shrink and leads to hair thinning or loss.

Other hormonal changes can be caused by thyroid deficiencies, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.

Lifestyle causes

Harsh hair styling products or styles can damage hair causing breakage or traction alopecia. Sudden weight loss can shock the system which sometimes results in hair loss or thinning. Stress can push hair into a shedding phase known as Telogen Effluvium. Hair shedding and thinning caused by lifestyle factors can be reversed when the underlying cause either stops or is treated.

Medical causes

Autoimmune conditions can affect the scalp, like Alopecia areata, where the body’s defence mechanisms can attack the hair follicles. This usually causes rapid patches of hair loss.

Medication can also cause hair loss. Chemotherapy, some acne treatments, some blood pressure medication, and certain thyroid medications can cause hair shedding at an increased rate. Hair loss caused by medication is usually reversed when the medication is stopped but medication should not be stopped without the guidance of a doctor.

Chronic illnesses can lead to decreased hair density. Conditions like lupus, thyroid conditions, and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) can lead to hair thinning and should be discussed with a doctor to treat the underlying cause.

Skin conditions including fungal infections of the scalp can damage hair and cause sudden patchy hair loss. This type of hair loss is again usually reversible once the infection has been treated.

How can I treat Hair Loss in the UK?

At Pharmabee we are committed to helping people by providing clinically approved treatment quickly and safely, without the need for visiting your doctor. We know you want access to treatment that works around your lifestyle so we have a range of UK clinically approved non-surgical treatments that can be authorised for you by our Hair Loss Specialist.

The treatments we have available have ingredients in them that are clinically proven to help reduce hair thinning.

Our specialist can provide either one or a combination of these ingredients, in a formulation that works with your lifestyle, to support you to be the you you want to be.

What other hair loss treatment options are available?

The medicines we provide are non surgical prescription only treatments for hair loss.

Other treatment options can include: wigs, hair extensions, nutritional supplemants, and hair transplant surgery.

Do hair loss treatments work?

Our products can be effective at slowing hair loss and thinning in many people, and some people may also notice an increase in hair density or growth. Hair loss treatment is long term and typically requires 3-6 months of continuous use for noticeable improvement, with peak effects usually achieved at the 2 year mark. Most people find that getting treatment as early as possible will yield the most favourable results.

As this is ongoing treatment it is important to note that stopping treatments will result in a loss of beneficial effects and a return to baseline within 6 – 12 months.

Is hair loss treatment safe?

We follow professional standards set out for your safety and all medicines are only prescribed where clinically appropriate.

Please note that it is very important to ensure prescription only products online should only be used from regulated websites that can supply UK medicines prescribed by UK pharmacists, like we do here at Pharmabee. Other online sources of medicines that do not follow UK standards could lead to fake or substandard medicines being supplied which could be harmful to your health.

Online treatments prescribed can be very safe. At Pharmabee you can be sure we only work with:

UK registered pharmacists

UK pharmacies registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Medicines approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)

Do hair loss treatments have side effects?

While our products can be extremely effective for patients, results may vary and side effects can occur. Please follow dosage directions, and read the Patient Information Leaflet, supplied with every box of medication as per UK MHRA guidelines, before starting treatment. The hair loss treatments we can provide are generally well tolerated but some side effects of note include:

Dutasteride

May have a higher risk of sexual side effects than Finasteride due to its longer half life, other side effects similar to Finasteride
